Golden House Restaurant & Pancake House
About This Spot
Stepping into Golden House Restaurant & Pancake House feels a bit like slipping back into a cherished corner of Chicago’s past. Nestled just north of the Riviera Theatre, this unpretentious diner pulses quietly with the rhythm of neighborhood life. The comfort of worn vinyl booths and classic checkered floors invites you to slow down and settle in, where the pace is comfortable and familiar — neither rushed nor staged.
Here, the air carries the warm savor of freshly brewed black coffee mingling with soft sizzles from the griddle. It’s a space where mornings effortlessly blend into afternoons, where conversations hover easily between laughter and quiet companionship. Whether you’re dropping in solo for a solid breakfast or gathering with friends to relive easy, old-school diner classics, the atmosphere is welcoming in a way that feels like coming home.
The menu lends itself to nostalgic indulgence without pretension, offering comfort through familiar flavors that hit just right. From golden hash browns and fluffy pancakes to hearty omelettes and simple yet satisfying sandwiches, each plate has a gentle, honest quality. There’s the nostalgic charm of a waffle topped with vanilla ice cream, the homey goodness of biscuits and gravy, and enough stirrings of variety to keep curiosity engaged without overwhelming. The food wraps around you much like the space itself — steady, reassuring, and rooted in tradition.
While the surroundings echo an earlier era, the experience remains very much of the moment – a quiet refuge from the city’s rush and polish. The occasional nod to vintage charm, like a menu that’s seen many years, or the enduring cash-only policy, serves as a reminder that some things are worth holding onto. Golden House is less about flash and more about the enduring comfort of simple, honest dining — where each visit feels more like a shared ritual than a meal.
For those who appreciate the slow delight of genuine neighborhood spots, this modest diner on Broadway quietly offers a welcomed pause. It embraces its role as a local staple, a place where the food’s warmth and the easygoing atmosphere invite you not just to eat, but to stay awhile and be part of a familiar story unfolding, one plate at a time.

Visited this place on a Sunday for lunch, and we got a table for 5 immediately. I ordered the Mexican omelette and some Sanka coffee. Food was delicious and affordable and the service was very prompt. Will definitely return!

Very likable old fashioned breakfast diner situated next door to the Riviera Theatre. The food grades at about average for breakfast fare. The potato pancakes were the standout here. The atmosphere was enjoyable, christmas decor still on display and the restaurant seating was primarily on classic vinyl bench seats that looked like they were still in good condition. Very old menus here, but that was part of the charm. The service was good, we were checked on by at least 3 people during our visit. Very surprised there was no wait to be seated despite other Google reviews advising us to expect a wait. There was a handful of free parking spots behind the restaurant in the alley (maybe 7 or 8 spots total.) I'd come back at some point.

Solid old school vintage diner. When you walk in you are taken back to the 80s. In a city full overpriced and overdone breakfast fare it is nice to be able to go to a vintage neighborhood staple for a delicious diner style breakfast or lunch. I had the Belgian waffle with a scoop of ice cream.

When it comes to breakfast I always get over medium eggs with sausage and hash browns. What matters to me is flavorful sausage and soft golden potatoes, this place got it right. A little pricey but I would come back. Maybe it’s because I ordered a slice of cheese on it with a side of tomato

Classic old school, cash only dinner. Being cash only in 2025 is annoying but the prices and quality of food makes up for it. If you want a classic dinner experience, this is the place to go.

This is a great neighborhood spot. Flavorful food that is affordable and comes out quick. The “country breakfast” is my go-to breakfast dish with a side of coffee. This place just feels right, especially for breakfast.

If you’re a Shameless fan, of course you’ve gotta pop in and check this place out. It’s just what you’d expect from a no frills greasy spoon. Good hearty breakfast options and they’re refilling your coffee before it’s half empty. Bring cash since they are cash only. There’s a Bank of America ATM right next door if you forgot. I got the 2-2-2-2 which comes with 2 buttermilk pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, and 2 sausage links. Everything was good. The bacon could have been a little crispier and greasier, was a bit on the dry side like it had been sitting under the heat lamp a little too long. No worries. Thanks for the experience. I live right down the street in Wrigley so I’ll be back,
